In recent years, U trung litchi trees have opened up new perspectives in plant restructuring on low-lying lands in Phu Cu district and An Thi district. This year, litchi growers are very excited because litchi yields a good harvest...

Along with the early harvest time, the dominant feature of the lychee is the thin skin having bright red color with thick pulp, sweet and aromatic flavor when it is ripe. The fruit is as big as a chicken egg, weighing 20 - 22 fruits per kilo. Therefore, U trung litchi is now sold right in the garden at the average price of VND 50,000 - 70,000 per kilo, 3 times higher than that of early ripening hybrid lychee.

U trung litchi variety was initially planted in the garden of Mr. Nguyen Van Vi's family in Ba Dong village, Phan Sao Nam commune (Phu Cu district), with the original litchi tree at 150 years of age, planted by Mr. Nguyen Van Diem (Mr. Vi's grandfather). Due to the fertile soil, this litchi tree produces big fruits every year with beautiful appearance, and special sweetness unlike other litchi verities.

From this litchi tree, Diem's children and grandchildren kept and propagated to many people in the area. In 2019, Phan Sao Nam commune established Quyet Tien Agricultural Cooperative to conserve and develop this precious litchi variety.

With 3 acres of U trung litchi, Mr. Mai Van Dien's family in Ba Dong village is currently having the largest growing area in Phan Sao Nam commune. Thanks to favorable weather and years of care, the output of this season is estimated at 7 tons of fruit.

This time, the fruitful litchi branches in his garden are getting bigger, making the passers-by really impressed. Mr. Dien said: “About 20 years ago, I extracted 60 seedlings from the litchi garden of Mr. Nguyen Van Vi's family. After that I propagated to expand the growing area. This year my family's litchi output is higher than last year. 100 litchi trees is estimated to harvest 7 tons of fruits, with the selling price of 60,000 - 70,000 VND per kilo. It is expected to generate over VND 400 million to my family ”.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Duc, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phan Sao Nam Commune said: “Currently, the whole commune has over 200 households growing U trung litchi over 78 hectares, concentrated mainly in Ba Dong village. About 20 hectares are ready for harvest, this year's output is estimated at 20-25 tons. Located adjacent to Phan Sao Nam commune, Doan Van Hieu's family in Binh Nguyen village, Da Loc commune (An Thi district) currently has 24 litchi trees being harvested. Mr. Hieu said: “This year, the weather is favorable, our family's U trung litchi output is estimated at 2.5 tons, up 30% compared to last year. Due to low output, every year, traders come to the garden to make orders in advance. I will also carry out the transplant to replace all 2.5 acres of early-ripening hybrid litchi into U trung litchi to enhance economic value ”.

According to the U trung litchi growers, this is the tree that requires elaborate care but gives an economic value much higher than normal litchi variety. Normally, the trees yield fruit alternately, which means one bumper crop alternating with one poor season. In recent years, thanks to the application of science and technology under Vietgap process, many U trung litchi households have overcome this limitation so that the litchi trees bloom every year.

According to data of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Phu Cu District, the litchi area of the district is 836 hectares, of which, U trung litchi area is 110 ha. This year, the weather is favorable and people have experiences in intensive planting of U trung litchi; thus, the output reaches about 50 tons, higher than the previous year. U trung litchi is the local specialty with superior appearance and quality, favored by the market, giving economic efficiency 2 to 3 times higher than early ripening hybrid litchi. Phu Cu district strives to expand 85.4 ha of litchi by the end of 2020, focusing in towns of Phan Sao Nam, Minh Tan, Quang Hung, Doan Dao, Minh Hoang and Tran Cao in order to develop the area of litchi tree in the direction of forming a specialized farming area for commodity production.
