Reducing production costs
Tien Chau Longan Cooperative, Hong Nam Commune (Hung Yen City) has 24 ha of longan cultivation, mainly varieties of longan: Huong chi, T6, super sweet... To improve operational efficiency, right from the establishment, the cooperative has built a model of producing safe longans according to VietGAP process. The production processes of members are strictly controlled, the fertilizers and pesticides are used according to the principle of "4 right" and organic fertilizers are increased. Mr. Nguyen Van Dien, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tien Chau Longan Cooperative, said: Currently, 100% of the cooperative's longan area is produced according to VietGAP process. Longan fruit produced according to VietGAP process has the following advantages: thin skin, thick pulp, sweet taste, aroma, diverse consumption markets, high selling price… In 2021, despite being affected by the Covid-19 epidemic, the longan fruit of the cooperative is still consumed stably with the average selling price of 30 thousand VND/kg of Huong chi longan.
Longan production according to VietGAP process at Da Loc Longan Cooperative (An Thi)
In this year's longan crop, the output of longan produced by VietGAP process of Minh Bao clean agricultural cooperative, Binh Kieu commune (Khoai Chau) is estimated to reach at more than 200 tons. Mr. Pham Duc Long, Director of Minh Bao clean agricultural cooperative said: In order to promote the effectiveness of longan cultivation, the cooperative actively mobilizes members to switch to planting good quality and specialty varieties of longan; 100% of the cooperative's longan area is produced according to VietGAP process to improve product quality and increase competitiveness in the market. VietGAP longan fruit has beautiful appearance and 10% reduction in production cost as compared to traditional production, 15% higher productivity. In addition, VietGAP longan fruit is purchased by traders from the garden, the selling price is about 20% higher than the market because it meets the design and quality.
According to the assessment of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, gardeners and longan produced according to VietGAP process are high quality indicators, ensuring food safety, sustainable farming and reducing production costs.
Expanding the consumption markets
According to a report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, currently, the province has about 5 thousand ha of longan cultivation, the area of longan produced under VietGAP process accounts for 30% of the total area. The output of longan this year is estimated to reach at 45 to 47 thousand tons, 5 to 10% higher than in 2021. Not only improving the quality, stabilizing the yield of longan, producing longan according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP processes also creates conditions to expand the consumption market for longan products of the province.
Comrade Cao Cuong, Head of Economic Division of Hung Yen city said: Currently, Hung Yen city has over 1 thousand ha of longan cultivation, concentrated in communes: Hong Nam, Quang Chau, Tan Hung... Longan is identified with branded and key crops, the city actively mobilizes gardeners to convert traditional production methods to organic and safe longan production; coordinate with specialized units to organize training on production techniques of VietGAP longan. Along with that, mobilizing gardeners to establish cooperatives and cooperative groups for longan production, creating a premise to build chains of production linkage and consumption of products. Up to now, the city has over 300 ha of longan produced according to VietGAP process, a number of cooperatives have exported fresh longan to the EU and Korean markets.
In order to expand the market for consuming longan fruits, up to now, the province has built a certificate of geographical indication for Hung Yen’s longan. The Plant Protection Department has issued 17 area codes for growing longan according to VietGAP standards, meeting the criteria in the following localities: Hung Yen city, Khoai Chau and Tien Lu districts, with a total area of nearly 300 ha. This is an opportunity to expand the province's longan consumption market to countries such as the US, Australia, Japan, China...
In fact, producing safe and good quality longan is the right and effective direction in promoting the potential and strengths of Hung Yen’s longan products. In the longan crop in 2021, during the time of complicated developments of the Covid-19 epidemic, Hung Yen's fresh longan is still consumed stably; some products of early ripening longan, sugar longan are still popular with customers with the price from 50 to 150 thousand VND/kg. In addition, longan products are produced according to VietGAP process of a number of cooperatives and gardeners, which are sold on e-commerce sites, linked to consumption in supermarkets and restaurants.
Mr. Nguyen Van Trang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said: In the coming time, the Department will continue to implement projects and models of longan production in the direction of goods and quality in order to increase production efficiency, create the own mark for Hung Yen’s longan; coordinate with localities in propagating and mobilizing people to expand longan production area according to VietGAP process, expand longan growing areas to be granted planting area codes for export. Along with that, cooperatives and gardeners also need to actively invest in preliminary processing, storage equipment to ensure the quality of post-harvest longans, creating favorable conditions for units to come and buy....
