Dao Quat communal house recognized as the national culture and historic relic site

Dao Quat used to be Dao Xa village. So as not to mistake it for another place, people called the village Dao Quat attached with the traditional bamboo hand fan making. Bamboo hand fans were brought into the capital city to serve the King.

According to history researcher, Tet Doan Ngo (mid-year festival) was held solemnly with many rituals of which there is the fan delivery ceremony to mandarins meaning presentation of luck, health and peace.

Dao Quat village was assigned to make bamboo hand fans. In the past, various competent craftsmen of Dao Quat village came to Thang Long to do the profession and gradually created Hang Quat street today. Now, the communal house Xuan Phien Thi worshipping the ancestor of bamboo hand fan making is still on Hang Quat street

Dao Quat village is famous for the general Dao Cong Chi who fought against Chiem thanh enemy. In the 11th Thuan Thanh year, the King sought the superb people to save the country. Hearing that in Dao Xa village, there was a person who mastered literature, matial arts and tactics, the King summoned him and asked about the plan to beat the enemy. He presented the schemes and was highly appreciated. He was entitled to command troops to wipe out the enemy.

Shortly after, Chiem invaders were wiped out of the border and the country became peaceful again. After his death, people built the worshipping house to commemorate him and appointed him Thanh Hoang lang (village god).

Dao Quat was also the homeland of the bourgeoisie Pham Chan Hung, Professor Pham Huy Thong. Pham Chan Hung soon started his career in Hanoi, participated the "Patriotism class", worked with patriots and joined the patriotism movements in the Hanoi old quarter. His family possessed multiple precious assets, and also mobilized the wealthy households in Hanoi old quarter to make donation to the revolution. Pham Huy Thong was is the first child of Pham Chan Hung and the 24th successor of General Pham Ngu Lao.

Following the patriotism ideology of his father, Pham Huy Thong was known as a historian, an archeologist, a political activist, a poem and a patriot. In 1937, Pham Huy Thong went to study in France and graduated Master of history and geography and PhD. of law. He was titled Professor and held the post of the member of the supreme education council of the France government.

In 1946, at the Fontainebleau conference, he was chosen as the interpreter and compiled documents for President Ho Chi Minh and our government. In 1949, he joined the French Communist Party and held the office as the head of communication team of Vietnamese patriots in France.

After being detained and put into jail, he was expelled from France. In 1952, he was put under surveillance in Hai Phong.In 1956, he was appointed to the principal of Hanoi national university of education. He was the first Director of Institute of Archeology and the Vice Chairman of Vietnam social science committee. He was also the founder of Vietnam science and history group. He was awarded Ho Chi Minh prize for the studies namely Con moong cave, Dong Son bronze drum and Hung Vuong era commentaries.

In the ancient cultural sediments of Dao Quat village, this was considered the center of Trong Quan singing of the whole delta. Cuu An river in front of Dao Quat communal house yard used to witness Trong Quan singing sessions during the village festival days between men and women of Dao Quat village and those in Tao Khe village across the river. Given that bamboo hand fan making in Dao Quat village is consigned to oblivion, it reinforces the traditional values of An Thi district so that people here much more honor and feel proud of the land rich in culture and history.
