Farmers in Dong Thanh commune harvest oranges

The growing areas of Vinh orange enter the harvesting season with the  selling price of VND 20,000 to VND 25,000 per kilo which is VND 5,000 to 7,000 higher per kilo year on year. Coming to Dong Thanh commune where is considered the orange hub of the district, from the early morning, means and people are mobilized to the garden to pick the yellow juicy oranges of the early harvesting.

Briefly cutting oranges, Mr. Luong Van Tuoi living in Thanh Sam village happily said: ' The orange growing area takes up 70% of the whole cultivation area. In order that Vinh orange trees develop sustainably, we apply strict Vietgap standards, use organic fertilizer, biological pesticides to create safe  fruit with delicate sweetness. Each orange sold on the market is stamped the origin traceability; thus, it's easy to go straight into supermarkets and clean grocery stores. Dong Thanh commune now has over 100 hectares of orange of all kinds. Defining orange as the major product in developing the economy, in the past years, the locality and orange growers in Dong Thanh commune have strived to build the product trademark. In 2016, Dong Thanh vegetable, fruit and bulb production, service and trading collective was founded to help members and growing households to support each other and step by step build up the trademark towards Vietgap quality. Today Dong Thanh commune has over 30 hectares of oranges certified to reach Vietgap standards.

Not only famers in Dong Thanh commune are busy with harvesting, but also those in Pham Ngu Lao are present in the garden to timely pick the ripe fruit. This year, the orange growers in the commune are excited on account of higher selling price year on year. Mr. Son said: 'My family converted rice cultivation areas into orange growing land since 2013. Now 70% of the orange growing area is made orders.

In the past years, Kim Dong district focuses on dissemination, creating favorable conditions to assist farmers to shift ineffective rice cultivation land into fruit growing; at the same time, holding training sessions, technical instruction sessions, joining market fairs andtrading promotion to search for consumption markets. Up till now, over 10 orange growing collectives well implement the link of production and consumption.

Mr. Hoang Van Minh, head of Kim Dong agricultural and rural development department said: 'The district is paying attention to executing the tasks in the Project of acceleration of growing model shift attached with high added value goods production for the period of 2020-2025; building, developing the fruit production areas towards the model of large scaled goods attached with product consumption link; in addition, encouraging the establishment of new modeled agriculture collectives in order that members can connect, learn and share experiences during their production process and business, orienting orange growing households to apply science, technology and Vietgap standards into production.
