Dien pomelo is a famous fruit having the origin in Phu Dien commune, Tu Liem district (Hanoi city). For many years, this variety has been brought to the province by Khoai Chau district, applying caring techniques and achieving high results in quality and yield. Currently, Khoai Chau district has over 430ha of Dien pomelo, concentrated in communes of Dong Tao, Da Trach, An Vi, Phung Hung, Dan Tien.

Despite unfavorable weather this year, thanks to many years of technical and caring experience, Dien pomelo of Hung Yen province not only ensures quality but also the selling price, bringing high economic efficiency to local people.

Leading us to visit the 19 year-old pomelo garden, which is heavy with fruit, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Tinh in Duc Nhuan village, Da Trach commune (Khoai Chau) introduces in detail about the characteristics, caring method and pest control as well as economic efficiency of Dien pomelo.

Mr. Tinh said “This year, my family harvested about 5,000 - 6,000 pomelos, sold for VND 25,000 to VND  30,000 each (VND 6,000 to 8,000 VND higher than last year). Dien pomelo is easy to consume; my family income of over VND 100 million per year after deducting all expenses”.

As a kind of easy-to-grow tree, it does not require high technique; caring carefully itself produces good harvest. Seeing high economic efficiency of planting Dien pomelo, many localities in the province such as Kim Dong, Tien Lu and Phu Cu also grow this kind of tree.

In Hung Yen, there are many households owning old Dien pomelo garden, each mature tree can produce from 60 to 100 fruits. The application of skillful caring techniques with the high quality source of pomelo seeds yields the fruits not only ensures the output but also the quality of original Dien pomelo. Dien pomelo brought to Hanoi market has the selling price from VND 30,000 to 40,000 per fruit.

Mr. Nguyen Van Uyen, one of the pioneering households in planting Dien pomelo in Noi Linh village, Ngo Quyen commune (Tien Lu district), said that “About 20 years ago, I heard information from the television about Dien pomelo generating high income. I went to the Dien village (Hanoi city) to buy seedlings to plant. In the first 3 years, the pomelo had sweet taste but didn’t have the taste of original Dien pomelo. Not until the 4th year, did it start to give a more delicious taste. This year, each Dien pomelo costs from VND 20,000 to VND 30,000, generating the family income of VND 200 to VND 300 million ”.

According to Uyen, the characteristic of Dien pomelo is that the older the tree is, the better the fruit quality. However, the older the tree is, the more likely it is to be destroyed by the bugs. Thus, as to avoid crop failure, it is necessary to catch bugs by regular manual methods and traps.

Stepping into riping Dien pomelo garden, shinning fruits and the fragrance wafting along the wind and spreading into space seem to hold the legs of visitors. How to enjoy Dien pomelo is different from others. Delicious pomelos are not too big, peels are not lumpy and have a beautiful yellow color. The fruit harvested should not be eaten immediately, but must be kept in a cool place after about 2 weeks until the pomelo generates more water, fragrance and sweetness. The special feature of Dien pomelo is that it can be preserved for 1 to 3 months; the longer it is, the more delicious it will be.

According to the data of the Agriculture and Rural Development of Hung Yen province, currently there are more than 1,000 varietes which are mainly Dien pomelo, Hoang pomelo, and Da xanh pomelo. Economic efficiency of Dien pomelo is rather high compared to other crops because this variety is suitable for soil conditions in many localities of Hung Yen province and the market demand for this fruit is high. However, in order to avoid redundant growing which lowers the selling price, it is necessary for the local authorities and functional agencies to pay close attention to the growing stage find more room for consumption and develop into the concentrated commodity production areas in order to generate stable income source and create sustainable development for people.
