While there are over 2 months to the harvest time of the main season, some early-ripening longan gardens can be harvested now.

As one of the person initiating the early-ripening longan growing, Mr. Dang Van Xay, Director of Hong Nam longan cooperative (Hung Yen province) has grown some early-ripening longan verities and applied physical measures to push the early flowering and fruiting. This year, his garden yields over 1 tons of  fruit.

Mr. Xay said: “Starting from the thought of spreading the harvest time to avoid devaluation, in recent years, I started to learn techniques to push the longan tree to flower and fruit early. Since August on the lunar calendar last year, I have been closely monitoring the growth of the tree and based on the weather to determine the time to stimulate flowering. Following VietGap standards to ensure food safety, I only use fertilizers and pesticides on the allowed list and ensure the isolation time at least 1 month before harvesting. ”

By this way, from the beginning of April on the lunar calendar, Mr. Xay can harvest longan for sale. Early ripening longan fruit has big and nice appearance with crunchy pulp, and dark sweet taste, so it is favored in the market. The selling price is about VND 60,000 per kilo, 1.5 times to 2 times higher than the main season.

Knowing how to push the trees to early flower and fruit, about 1 month ago, Mr. Trinh Ngoc Tiep in Ngoc Dong hamlet, Ngoc Thanh commune (Kim Dong district) harvested early ripening longan and sold at high prices.

Accordingly, Mr. Tiep still applied traditional forms of care such as fertilizing and timely pest control. However, after the process of researching and learning experience from other longan growers in the province, he chose the time to cut off the branches to promote the early flowering.

This season, Mr. Trinh Ngoc Tiep is estimated to harvest 1 tons of early-ripening longan

Forty trees of his family can be harvested and reserved by customers. It is estimated to harvest over 1 tons of fruit and generate the profit of VND 55 million to VND 60 million.

He said: “In order that the trees flower and fruit early, the growers must master high technology, understand characteristics of each variety and the weather condition to determine the time to work on trees. Our family just have 70% of the trees flowering and fruiting early as we expected”

According to Growing section of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Hung Yen province has 4,845 hectares of longan in all kinds. The early ripening longan just holds a small area, scattering in localities. According to specialists and households, the rate of trees flowering and fruiting is 85% to 90%; the longan output is expected at 45,000 tons to 50,000 tons, which is 18,500 tons higher than 2019.

In order to ensure the output, quality and the trademark as well as increase the economic efficiency of Hung Yen longan specialty, the Agriculture sector recommends that growers adhere to longan production process to ensure the food hygiene and safety; avoid stimulants and banned substances in the caring process and storage; use pesticides on the allowed list and ensure the isolation time before harvest; avoid harvesting young longan to sell at high price.
