Aging 77 years, Meritorious artisan Do Van Len living in Lac Thuy village, Dong Ket commune, Khoai Chau district still keeps learning, devotedly teaches and ignites the fire of love for Cheo singing to the next generations, making a contribution to preservation and promotion of the national intangible cultural heritage.

Visiting the artisan in a winter freezing morning; yet, we felt warm inside as listening to him bearing his heart about his passion for Cheo singing and his fervent wish about protection and communication of this national rhythm to the young generation.

When he was still young, Len listened to Cheo singing program on TV and watched the performances at the communal house yard. Since then, the love for Cheo had gradually absorbed into him and become his indispensable spiritual food. He joined the musical performance team of the commune and learned how to sing, catch the breath and techniques in Cheo singing.

In 1965, he joined the military and became the superb singer in the musical movement of the unit. He was sent to a class specialized in composing and performing Cheo and went to many places to serve Cheo singing to soldiers. In 1973, he returned his home, and was assigned to work with the musical performance team of the commune to arrange and perform the ancient Cheo plays to serve people. In 1999, Lac Thuy established a musical team headed by Len. This musical team changed its name to Lac Thuy Cheo theater and is still active up till now.

As for artistic activities, he singly did research to compose Cheo works, compile the scenarios, produce the programs for the Cheo theater of the village to perform in the galas in other provinces. Len has been with Cheo singing for 60 years now, fully mastered hundreds of Cheo melodies and actively taught this artistic subject to enthusiasts.

Going through a long time of practicing the Mother Goddesses worship, thanks to fully master rituals and practice principles, Duc has been teaching to various people. She is always careful in every serving session, from costumes to dancing, which ensures the solemnity, respect and presents the spiritual value of praising generals who made great contributions to the country.

When he was young, he had a chance to watch the performances of Long Hung Cheo singing team and taught by artisans there. In 1976, he was appointed to the head of the musical team of Hai Trieu commune and sent to the refresher course in the district. Since then, he had been engrossed in compiling, directing and performing in musical performance programs within the district and the province.

With the responsibility and passion of folk melodies, Viet is always aware of building and consolidating cultural and musical movements in the locality. He is willing to teach any melodies to whom wants to learn. He is also active to compose new songs with the main content of praising the country and President Ho Chi Minh.

Although he did not go to a professional training school, when standing on the stage, Viet still burned with all his might for traditional art. The drum sound, ca tru melodies, and Trong quan sound have become familiar tunes inmind of people who love traditional folk art in Hai Trieu homeland.
