Cheo singing is the product of folk culture and the entertainment of the people in the Northern area. Cheo singing includes poetry, folk songs and performances. The content of performances is to encourage good work, eliminate evils, reflect people's daily life and wishes of farmers. The place where Cheo singing is performed is the communal house; thus, this art form is called "Cheo san dinh". The area for Cheo singing takes place is as wide as a mat (Chieu); thus, it is also called Chieu cheo. All the accessories and instruments are arranged neatly in a box. When the performing place is changed, artists carry them on yokes (don ganh). So people also call this group "ganh cheo".The box is also the theatrical prop which acts as a mound, a mountain or a throne. While Cheo performance is a seasonal profession, incomes differ among different roles and artists.

Ancient Cheo singing takes places on a mat in the middle of the yard of the communal house. Actors' roles are diverse. They can be audiences sometimes. In order to begin the performance, actors must dissolve the crowd to arrange an enough space to lay the mat. Then they play all kinds of sounds to impress audiences. As the preparation is ready and the crowd is getting less noisy, the actor starts singing and asks audiences questions or play on words to arouse audiences' curiosity. Audiences can respond and go with the lead of the actors. Sometimes it's difficult to distinguish the art creators and audiences who enjoy the art.

Hung Yen is the cradle of Cheo singing which absorbs into people's soul from generations to generations. Now it's time for creators of Cheo singing to shine. People's Artists Hoa Tam, Hoang Lan, Manh Tuong and Cheo flute artist Le Van Ly are highlights of modern Cheo singing in Hung Yen province since August revolution till now.
