Coming to Nguyen Hoa commune these days, which is the hub of yellow-fleshed oranges in Phu Cu district, standing on the high dike and having a bird view below, you can see immense ripe orange gardens. According to the elderly in the commune, orange was firstly grown in Thi Giang village after Dang Van Quy brought the young trees from Bo Ha (bac Giang district) to grow here 20 years ago. Orange trees well responded to the local weather and soil and developed fast. After that, Quy bred the plants to sell in the village.
Dang Van Nguyen, vice president of the communal people's committee said: 'There are over 30 hectares growing yellow-fleshed oranges in Thi Giang and Sy Quy village. In order to widespread the breeding, Nguyen Hoa commune has created favorable conditions to establish Nguyen Hoa agricultural service collective, send staff to instruct farmers in technical planting and takeafter process under Vietgap standards and to develop the yellow-fleshed oranges to reach three-star OCOP in 2021.
Hurriedly plucking ripe yellow oranges, Dang Thanh Nhon said:' From the beginning of Nov., vendors from Hai Phong, Quang Ninh province made orders on site with the selling price of VND 12,000 to VND 15,000 per kilo'.
From Nguyen Hoa commune, orange trees are bred to many other areas in the district. 8 years ago, Tran Thi Bich in Hoang Xa village, Tan Tien commune converted 3 acres of poor rice cultivation to orange growing.
After 5 years, the gardens yield 1.2 to 1.5 metric tons per acre. After all expenses are deducted, the profit is VND 12 million per acre. Quyen added: 'I found that Bo Ha orange can generate considerable income and is easy to take care of, I went to Nguyen Hoa commune to buy strong young plants .
Phu Cu district has over 495 hectares of citrus fruit. Orange trees are grown mostly in the Southern communes of the district such as Nguyen Hoa, Tam Da, Tien Tien. Total output of the district in 2022 is estimated at 2,500 metric tons, doubling the figure in 2021 especially as for the yellow-fleshed oranges.
According to the households, this breeding normally ripens in Nov. and Dec. on the Lunar calendar. When it's ripe, the orange turns yellow, has thick pulp and rough skin. Relying on the take-after technique and age of the tree, each one can bear 50 to 200 fruits weighing from 400g to 1 kilo. Specially, the ripe orange can be stored under normal condition in 3 to 5 months without being rotten.
Bui Quang Nam, Head of the Agricultural and Rural development of Phu Cu district said: "Thanks to favorable conditions, large land fund and fertilized soil, the yellow-fleshed oranges have opened an appropriate direction for households. In order to encourage farmers to grow oranges in particular and citrus fruit in general, the district co-builds the new-modeled collective, instructs farmers to plant, take care orange trees under Vietgap standards, uplifts the trademark of oranges by developing OCOP-certified products, accelerates the supportive activities of agro product consumption'
