Beautiful melodies of Trong Quan singing is one of the potentials to promote the community-based tourism Left behind the hustle and bustle of the city, on weekends, Mr. Tran Quang Phong (Hanoi) takes his children to Hung Yen city to enjoy the peaceful and serene atmosphere and experience the growing process of clean vegetables and pick up the ripen longan fruit to make the famous dish called “Che sen long nhan” (Sweet lotus seeds cooked with dried longan). After this vacation, Quang’s family is looking forward to returning to this land someday in order to explore details about rituals and culture of people of this landscape. Visiting Hung Yen, the land lies in the center of Red River Delta, tourists can take relaxing stroll and see the rice paddies changing colors all year round, which are proportionate to the life circle of the rice, from the green of young rice leaves to the darker green and then the shiny yellow of bumper crops. The sweet aroma of young rice and the image of farmers working hard on rice paddies give the feeling of serenity, happiness and abundance to tourists. Only when slowly cycling around the tidy concrete roads or lying on the hammock under the shade of fruitful trees and singing of birds in summer afternoons to listen to the locals talking about the rituals and culture of the landscape, can we realize that life is so vivid. Specially, from the green winding banks running from Van Giang district through Khoai Chau district and Kim Dong district to Hung Yen city, visitors can see the four season fruitful tree gardens where they can pick and enjoy the ripen fruits and take them home. Visiting the concentrated clean agriculture zone and helping farmers grow vegetables under Vietgap standard are the unforgettable treat of Hung Yen. In addition, tourists are fascinated by the space of Dai Dong ancient village where treasures rich culture of Vietnam and Vietnamese architecture and scenery with “cây đa, giếng nước, sân đình” (Banyan, well, communal yard). They can live the typical traditional lifestyle, and daily routine of farmers in the Northern Delta, visit the ancient houses in Van Giang district, Tien Lu district, Phu Cu district and Hung Yen city, take a sip of aromatic lotus tea and enjoy Kinh Ky’s signature dishes such as Phuong Tuong stewed frog, Cha Ga Tieu Quan, The Ky rice vermicelli soup with chicken, eggs, and pork, Phung Cong Rang Bua cake, Me So steamed rice roll, sweet lotus seeds cooked with dried longan and enjoy sweet melodies of Trong Quan singing and Ca tru singing.

As a long-established land, Hung Yen has various craft villages connected to the cultural and historical tradition of Northern residents such as: Cao Thon incense village, Lien Khe rattan and bamboo weaving village, Thu Sy fish pot weaving village, Truong Xa wine village, Hue Lai silver carving village, Hoa Phong carpentry village, Nghia Trai herbal medicine village, Long Thuong bronze casting village, Xuan Quan ceramics, flower and bonsai village…
Households still remain manual method which is appealing to tourists especially the ones living in urban areas and foreign tourists who would like to discover and experience life and community lifestyle of locals. Tourists not only witness the manufacturing process of handicraft products but also talk to artisans to explore local culture. Tourists can have the opportunity to join in some processes of product manufacturing.
While the community-based tourism has a lot of potentials, its development is still limited. The number of tourists, especially foreigners coming to the province is less than the capacity the province can offer. Due to poor facilities, tourists just do the sight-seeing within a day but have no demand of accommodation. Turnover from tourism is low.
Mr. Pham Van Hieu, the Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism said that community-based tourism not only yields the economic profits but this is also an effective way to disseminate the image of nature, culture and people of the longan landscape. In the General planning of Hung Yen tourism development by 2015 and vision by 2030, the community-based tourism is prioritized to develop. At the same time, the Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism frequently organizes the training on community-based tourism development to residents of Hung Yen city and Van Giang district.
In order to enhance the potentials of community-based tourism sustainably and effectively, departments, agencies of tourism management and sale and locals need to cooperate intensively. There should be exclusive policies for community-based tourism development which includes job creation to households engaging in the tourism; planning and establishment of community-based tourism villages, investment on facilities and infrastructure in service of tourism and assistance on dissemination and personnel training.
