Hung Yen egg lychee at Phan Sao Nam commune (Phu Cu district) was packaged

We were present in a large lychee garden of Mr. Mai Van Dien in Hung Yen province in Ba Dong village, Phan Sao Nam commune (Phu Cu district) in the harvesting season. Holding the big ripening lychee bunches, Mr. Dien was happy to say that his family started to grow the egg lychee 20 years ago. This year, his family has been harvesting over 6 to 7 tons of fruit with the selling price of VND 100,000 to VND 130,000 per kilo, up VND 20,000 to VND 30,000 compared to the previous season. The lychee is certified Vietgap standards, good in quality and appearance and well packaged before shipping. From the end of March, regulars made orders in large quantity; however, the supply was not enough. Ms. Hong Minh in Hanoi said: 'Each year, I make orders of lychee early to eat and as a gift; at the same time, I would like to disseminate Hung Yen specialty to my friends'

Mr. Vu Dinh Binh, Deputy Chairman of the People's committee of Phan Sao Nam commune said: 'Now the commune has converted 125 hectares of rice growing land to egg-lychee growing land, of which 12 hectares of Quy Tien collective (Phan Sao Nam commune) is certified Vietgap standards. This year, thanks to favorable weather and better growing techniques, Hung Yen egg lychee season is bumper with high selling price'. This season, Quyet Tien collective is cooperating with enterprises and expects to export 1 tons of egg lychee to Japan. According to the Agriculture and Rural development department of Phu Cu district, Hung Yen egg lychee tree has the origin from the 150-year-old ancestral lychee tree of Nguyen Van Vi's family in Ba Dong, Phan Sao Nam commune. Due to fertile soil, each year, this ancestral lychee tree yields big fruit in nice appearance, with better sweetness and fragrant than other variety of lychee.

Now the egg lychee is grown to other areas in the province and becomes the income source for many households. Mr. Doan Van Hieu in An Thi district said that since he bought the breeding of the ancestral lychee tree, his family has been managing over 2 hectares of the egg lychee with the estimated output of 3.5 tons, up 20% compared to the previous season. As of May 30, the lychee garden of Mr. Hieu has been harvested but the output is not enough for the demand of customers.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the area of egg lychee in Hung Yen province is estimated at 230 hectares, mostly in Phu Cu district and a part of An Thi district. In order to encourage people to grow this variety of lychee, the province has issued the plan to direct related departments and sectors and Phu Cu district to extract budget to assist grafting of the egg lychee variety on stumps of the early-ripening lychee; to hold training and technique transfer on lychee growing; to join the trade promotion markets to connect gardens and enterprises in consumption of lychees and typical OCOP products
