At a regular ministry press conference in Hanoi on May 23 in response to reporters’ queries about Vietnam’s reaction to China’s organisation of the seventh Sinan Cup Regatta, a sailing competition, from April 22-26, 2019 at the area of Duy Mong island belonging to Vietnam’s Hoang Sa archipelago, The Spokesperson of Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang stated:
"Vietnam has a full legal basis and historical evidence affirming sovereignty over the two archipelagos of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa in accordance with international law.
China's organization of the 7th Sinan Cup Regatta near the Paracel Islands of Vietnam seriously violated Vietnam's sovereignty, went against Vietnam and China's agreement on basic principles for solving matters at sea, and against the spirit of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and complicated the situation and undermined efforts to maintain peace, stability and cooperation in the East Sea.
Vietnam requested China side to respect Vietnam's sovereignty over the two archipelagos of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa, without recurring the above-mentioned activities and increasing stress and complicating the situation in the region”
Regarding the information in the Report on May 20 from experts of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), clam fishing fleets accused of destroying China's environment have increased their activity in the East Sea, specifically waters around Da Bong Bay and Bach Quy island belonging to Vietnam's Paracel Islands. Spokesperson of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang stated that:
The exploitation of resources in the East Sea should comply with the provisions of international law as stated in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982.
The exploitation of natural resources in the East Sea should respect the sovereignty of coastal countries, comply with regulations on ecological environment protection. Countries must fulfill their obligations in accordance with international treaties on the environment.
