Location Yen My is located in the northwest of Hung Yen province, which is 30 km from Hung Yen city, 30 km from Hanoi, located in the northern key economic region (Ha Noi - Hung Yen - Hai Duong - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh). 2. Natural conditions

          Terrain and climate

Yen My is located in the center of the Red River delta, so the terrain of the district is relatively flat and slightly inclined from the North West to the Southeast. The average height is from 2.5 to 3.5m, the highest level is 4m, and the lowest is from 1.5 to 2m. The land of the district is formed by alluvial of the Red River Delta.

Yen My district in particular and Hung Yen province in general are located in the northern delta, under the influence of tropical monsoon climate. The weather in the year is divided into two distinct seasons. Summer is hot, humid with heavy rain and lasts from April to October. The winter is cold, dry and usually lasts from November to April of the following year.

Hydrological

Yen My district has a dense river system. Bac Hung Hai River flows from the north to the southeast with surrounding rivers such as Tu Ho River, Trung River, and Kim Nguu River. In addition, there are major water channels such as Tam Ba Hien, Trung Thuy Nong T11, T3 flowing through the district. The river system which combines with inland irrigation system meets the requirements of agricultural production

3. History and development

Yen My district today is created from the red alluvial accretion. In the sixth Hung King period, ancient Vietnamese from the northern midland provinces of Thanh Hoa migrated to this area to establish villages and set up hamlets. The very first residents of Yen My district mainly engaged in agricultural production, animal husbandry and handicrafts. Under Hung King (2879 - 257 BC), Yen My is located in Duong Tuyen province, Van Lang. As a land carrying long-standing cultural traditions, Yen My district features the characteristics of Kinh Bac culture

However, Yen My became a district administrative unit only after the establishment of Bai Say in 1890. When it was removed, Yen My became a district in Hung Yen province.

In 1999, Yen My district was re-established from My Van district. Yen My's economy has recovered rapidly after the re-establishment, thanks to the preferential treatment of the province, the domestic and foreign enterprises have chosen Yen My as their investment destination.

Yen My is also famous for its study tradition. Throughout the feudal dynasties of Vietnam, from the examination in the year of At Ty (in 1185) to Le Trung Hung dynasty in the year of At Mui (in 1775), 32 Yen My’s people passed in high ranks. In addition, Yen My is the home of Le Huu Trac (Hai Thuong Lan Ong) - the father of Vietnamese traditional medicine in our country.

Patriotic tradition in the battle against invaders is also a prominent feature of land and people here. During the process of building and defense of the country, Yen My people always keep the spirit of solidarity, together with the people of the country to cling to the land, keep the village and protect the country.

Inheriting the traditions from previous generation, Yen My people carry the indomitable spirit and braveness in the war against French colonialists. When French colonialists invaded our country, Yen My became the target area of ​​Bai Say insurgent army which was the terror of French invaders. In the period 1939-1942, Party organizations were attacked, Yen My people were not afraid of danger, covering soldiers.  In 1942, the first party organization in Yen My was established by Mr. Ngo Van Cuong who was the Secretary. Amid the revolutionary movement expanded,  Yen My party cell tried to mobilize people to take up the insurrection. From the battle against French colonialists to that against American imperialists, Yen My people were consistent with the Party, creating glorious victory to contribute to the victory of the nation.

Yen My always has full of talents. General Trieu Quang Phuc based on the shape of Da Trach pond to defeat Luong troops and bring independence back to the country to continue the heroic page of Van Xuan state. Doan Thi Diem was talented in literature and poetry. Le Huu Trac was famous for his medical ethics to save people and regarded as the father of medicine. It is also the home of great politicians and generals such as former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Van Linh, Lieutenant General Nguyen Binh, Major General Dang Ngoc Giao, and Major General Nguyen Chien.

4. Administrative units

There are 17 administrative units, including 16 communes and 1 town with a total area of 91.00 km2, specifically:

Yen My has the total administrative area of 4.02 km2

Giai Pham has the total administrative area of 5.80 km2   

Nghia Hiep has the total administrative area of 3.24 km2   

Dong Than has the total administrative area of 8.56 km2   

Ngoc Long has the total administrative area of 4.91 km2   

Lieu Xa has the total administrative area of 6.51 km2   

Thanh Long has the total administrative area of 6.10 km2   

Tan Lap has the total administrative area of 5.17 km2   

Trung Hoa has the total administrative area of 8.66 km2   

Trung Hung has the total administrative area of 3.4 km2   

Thuong Kiet has the total administrative area of 7.74 km2   

Tan Viet has the total administrative area of 4.03km2   

Yen Phu has the total administrative area of 7.8 km2   

Viet Cuong has the total administrative area of 2.57 km2   

Minh Chau has the total administrative area of 3.31 km2   

Yen Hoa has the total administrative area of 3.42 km2   

Hoan Long has the total administrative area of 5.67 km2   

5. Society and economy

Yen My is now considered one of the most dynamic economic districts of Hung Yen province. Yen My district is located along the 5A, 39A national highway, Ha Noi - Hai Phong highway and Hanoi - Hung Yen road and is an attractive area for investment development, creating a dynamic region of economic development and integration.

The economic structure of the district has been shifted positively towards increasing the proportion of small industry and commerce and services, and gradually reducing the proportion of agriculture. Over the years, with extensive policies and investment strategies in the right direction, Yen My is becoming an attractive destination for domestic and foreign investors. Especially, with favorable geographic position, Yen My economic development has been relatively stable on socio-economic aspects.  In 2005, the economic growth rate reached 18.03%. Economic structure focused on Agriculture - Construction industry - Trade and services, which reached 4.1%, 27.95% and 19.71% respectively. Average income per capita reached VND 7.5 million per year; the income per hectare of cultivated land was VND 41.8 million. Structure of agricultural economy focused on cultivation - Aquaculture – Service which accounted for 61.2%, 34.9% and 3.9% respectively. The budget revenue in the province reached 21.017 billion.

In 2006, the economic growth rate reached 20.16%. The economic structure focused on Agriculture - Construction industry - Trade and service which reached 3.47%, 35.63% and 20.81% respectively. Income per capita reached 8.76 million VND per year; income yielded on a hectare of farming was 43.17 million; Structure of agricultural economy focused in cultivation - Aquaculture – Service which reached 57.7%, 38.2% and 4.1% respectively. Budget receivables in the area were VND 22.583 billion.

The results of economic development over 2 years has showed that Yen My has been steadily developing. The average growth rate (2005-2010) reached 19.93%; Economic structure shifted towards increasing industrial and service sectors. The proportion of agriculture - construction industry - trade and services reached 19.28%, 42.82% and 37.9% respectively. Average income per capita reached VND 22 million. Agriculture develops comprehensively, in the direction of commodity production. The average growth rate (2005-2010) reached 2.83%. The structure of agriculture focused on cultivation - Aquaculture - Services with the proportion of 42.7%, 55% and 2.3% respectively.

Industry – handicraft industry

The district has a national highway 39A running through. The routes are distributed evenly across the district.  National highway 39 and National Highway 5 create a favorable condition for circulation in the northern key economic region. Promoting the advantages and potentials of localities, in the past years, industrial and handicraft production in the district has developed rapidly, together with the development of industry and handicraft industry as well as service and agriculture sector. In 2004, there were 1,928 households and 5 traditional handicraft villages in the district specialized in such sectors as food processing, tanning, furniture, construction materials, bamboo and rattan exports, and new occupations such as car box and cabinets making.

The total value of non-state industrial production in the district in 2003 reached VND 72,484 billion, accounting for 26.86%. In 2004, the district attracted 85 projects and 55 projects were approved by the province. Of which, 24 enterprises went into production. In 2003, industrial production value was VND 196.21 billion, accounting for 72.8%.

Agriculture

In the development orientation to make Yen My catch up with the national development, the Party Committee and People's Committee of the district set up the agricultural development strategy in the direction of promoting the economic restructuring towards commodity production, take initiatives in introducing plant varieties and animal breeds, quickly transferring high-quality special rice varieties and high economic value food into production. Also, the district focuses on developing animal husbandry towards industrialization in which associates cultivation and husbandry with processing industry. The development is contributing to living standard improvement and step by step developing agricultural production towards industrialization.

 Thanks to extensive policies, Yen My district agriculture has developed relatively well. Structural shift in agriculture initially achieved good results. The district has focused on promoting the transfer of science and technology into production. Every year, high-quality rice fields are planted, creating a high volume of products for the market and for export. The average rice yield was over 12 tons per ha; the winter crop area was expanded to over 45% of the total area.

The restructuring of the crop structure has been planned, attached with the development of the farm economy. In 2003 the whole district had 102 farms meeting the criteria of the province and the Ministry. Models of farm economy are initially improved, resulting in high economic efficiency.

The strongly enacted policies of Yen My district in agriculture has contributed to make a positive change in the structure of plants and animals, bringing high commodity value per unit area. The structure of agricultural economy changed strongly, actively reducing the proportion of cultivation and increasing the proportion of animal husbandry. More importantly, the change in people's perceptions in agricultural production which is not merely the manual work has yielded high income.

Trade and services

Commercial and service is running fast, reaching VND 518.54 billion in 2004. Due to advantages of geographical position, service activities are developing strongly, especially in the following districts: Yen My, Cong Trang- Tan Viet, Tu Ho-Yen Phu, Trung Hung, and Luc Dien.

Promoting internal strength to attract external forces and boost up socio-economic development is the right direction that the Party, Government and people of Yen My have targeted at. The goal is making Yen My one of the "gold addresses" of domestic and foreign investors. Yen My economic landscape is gradually developing towards industrialization and modernization.

6. Historical relics and festivals

Currently, Yen My district still preserves many historical relics associated with the names of people who have contributed to the country. Many temples of celebrities are still preserved such as  De Thien temple, De Thich Temple in Lien Ho; Do Tu Dien temple; Pham Cong Tru Temple; King Street in Chau Xa (Thanh Long) where Hai Ba Trung stopped by on the way to battle To Dinh; Lieu Trung pagoda, the relics of Hai Thuong Lan Ong in Lieu Xa commune.
